The painter and sculptor Michael Buthe lived and worked in both his adoptive home in Cologne and Marrakech in Morocco. His vivid, varied, even surreal style incorporating numerous oriental picture elements belongs to the most colourful artists of the second half of the 20th century. In a world dominated by technology his art often seems playful, kitschy or poetic, sometimes even archaic. In addition to his participation in the Venice Biennale Michael Buthe is one of the few artists who have taken part in all four documentas in Kassel from 1972 until 1992.
