The painter and designer Sonia Delaunay, born Sarah Stern (she called herself Sonia Terk after her uncle), married the French painter Robert Delaunay in 1910. This marriage should create a productive artistic liaison. Sonia Delaunay is an influential artist of the abstract style. Her works emphasise colours and light; she is believed to be a pioneer in geometrical abstraction. In addition to her painting she designed fabrics, fashion, and furniture and produced writings. Her works feature in renowned collections and museums worldwide. In 1975 she was awarded membership in the French Légion d’Honneur. She bequeathed her graphic works to the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
