Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung was a German-French painter and graphic artist. He was born in Leipzig and became a French citizen following the end of the war in 1946. Hartung’s paintings were defined by his non-representational style with spontaneous brushwork. The graphic black line work on light backgrounds is reminiscent of Chinese calligraphies. Hartung is one of the most important representatives of the European “Informel”, the artistic French movement parallel to the US-American abstract Expressionism. As an internationally renowned artist he has received a number of awards. He participated in the documenta I, II and III and was honoured by receiving the Venice Biennale award.
