Born in New Castle as Robert Clark, he renamed himself after his home State of Indiana. His most famous work is the word LOVE, painted in red, blue and green, with a tilted the O. The reduction to the essentials and the combination of colour fields and block letters and numbers are characteristics of his works and made him a famous representative of American pop art. Due to his use of symbols and signs, which are optimistic, abundant, easily understandable, memorable and sometimes naïve, Indiana is called the painter of the American Dream. He took part in the documenta IV and also painted a part of the Berlin Wall.
