The painter and sculptor Klaus Wolf Knoebel, known under the pseudonym Imi, was born in Dessau and studied under Josef Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He used plates as his picture elements, in clear and strong colours, lacquered in a technically sterile way. In exhibitions the plates hang next to each other in strict order, or are put into paintings in layers, generating their optical attraction through picture and colour combinations. Imi Knoebel’s works were shown at the documenta 5, 6, 7 and 8. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the German University Jena in 2006.
