The German painter, sculptor and graphic artist A.R.Penck, born Ralf Winkler, is one of the most significant contemporary artists. Born in Dresden, in the former GDR, he suffered under the communist system. His applications to Schools of Art were rejected and his paintings confiscated. Penck has been living in the West since 1980, currently in Dublin, Ireland. In his art he uses pictorial symbols, mostly stick figures, which are reminiscent of archaic cave painting or graffiti. He is considered the father of the art movement ““New Image Painting””. He also transfers his use of forms to wood and bronze sculptures. He has taken part in a number of exhibitions of the documenta in Kassel and has received a number of important art awards.
