The painter and sculptor Antoni Tąpies i Puig was born in Barcelona and is considered one of the most important Catalan artists of modern times. He began painting as an autodidact, and engaged in contemporary philosophy and literature, studying law, and socialising with artists and intellectuals on his travels through Europe. Inspired by Marxism he campaigned for the independence of creative art and social freedom through public appearances and publications. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by a number of European universities. His painting style keeps to the simplified but essential messages. Numerous museums and the murals at the University of St. Gallen are examples of his works.
