The painter, graphic artist, photographer and director Andy Warhol (originally Andrew Warhol) is co-founder and star of American pop art. His artistic genius consisted in detecting new ideas and possibilities of contemporary art early on, although such paintings were initially rejected. A trained and successful advertising graphic designer, he had a sense for aesthetic design, colours and their effects. He modelled himself on Dadaism, the separation of art and life. Pop art is understood to be the creation of serial art productions of known motifs. Helped by his cohabitants he created screen prints of idols of his time and of simple, known articles of daily use.
